It is upsetting to see what is happening in American policing today. In some communities, police legitimacy is at an all-time low, and law enforcement’s trust in the residents of those localities is equally low. The ambushing of officers out of retribution by societal outliers and the vilifying police by the national media has been at an all-time high in recent years. The role of a police officer has significantly changed in the last few decades. Police work is more technological, resulting in more schooling. These days, the typical patrol vehicle consists of a mounted laptop, a credit card reader, body cameras, and highly sophisticated speed detection equipment. Add to this the failure of social services, the increase in citizens with mental health issues, the rise in homelessness, domestic violence, and growing threats of terrorism is forcing a change in the policy, procedure, and basic law enforcement training (Dunham).
