Pratt Pilot Club International members wanted to honor the Pratt Regional Medical Center volunteers for not giving up and continuing to give of their time during the recent COVID pandemic. They delivered treats during February to the medical center campus in Pratt to say “thank you” to volunteers who have continued to help out despite difficult circumstances.
Illegitimate money-seekers continue to plague society with scams, some specifically targeting the elderly. A re-emergence of a phonecall scam tactic in Kansas has prompted authorities to issue a high alert.
Pawnee Valley Community Hospital patients now have face-to-face access to a HaysMed cardiologist who regularly travels to Larned to treat a variety of heart conditions. Kalyan Wagle, MD, offers his outreach clinic monthly at the hospital’s Specialty Care Clinic; he has cared for HaysMed patients for close to two years.
MANHATTAN, Kan. – Kansas 4-H Youth Development program coordinator Shannon Rogge said the state’s shooting sports program provides an opportunity for caring adults to assist kids in positive youth development.
The walleye has become a highly-sought game fish for Kansas anglers and has been stocked in most federal reservoirs and some larger state and community lakes. To help maintain these fisheries, millions of young walleye are collected and stocked each spring by department biologists. The state record weighed 13 pounds, 3 ounce. The world record is 22 pounds, 11 ounces.
Though lettuce is most often planted directly from seed in late March to early April, it can be started from transplants. Transplants allow lettuce to mature earlier so that it escapes the excessive heat that can lead to a strong flavor and bitterness. Seed should be started four to five weeks before transplanting. Because transplants are planted at the same time as direct seeding, now would be a good time to begin. Use a seed starting mix and plant shallow as lettuce requires light for germination. A soil media temperature of 60 to 68 degrees will encourage germination. Watch the media temperature carefully, as seed can enter a thermal dormancy if germination temperatures are excessive.
Before long, we will be saying goodbye to the quieter, cold days of winter. Spring will burst forth with beauty, warm colors, and humid days.
I was talking to my friend Ed about things they have done in the trucking industry that have been ridiculous. I worked for a company that thought they would save fuel if the trucks wouldn’t idle more than seven minutes.
I portrayed a busybody, talk-a-lot character this past weekend in the Front Porch Dinner Theater fundraiser, and now that it is over I can truthfully say, some people just talk too much. It’s fun to laugh and have a good time, but I have truly developed a new appreciation for the phrase ‘silence is golden.’
