SCCF SCHOLARSHIPS DUE MARCH 15

South Central Community Foundation (SCCF) is excited to offer nearly 40 scholarships to its seven-county service area. New this year, the Foundation will be accepting all applications on an online portal, which will allow students to sub- mit a universal application and then apply for each individual scholarship as eligible. A complete list of guidelines and applications for each opportunity can be found online at www.sccfks.org. SCCF is a nonprofit organization that serves Barber, Comanche, Kingman, Kiowa, Pratt, Rice, and Stafford Counties. In 2021, SCCF awarded nearly $75,000 in scholarships. Jurassic Quest is one of the first indoor family edutainment shows to re-launch since March 2020 due to the pandemic and will visit Amarillo with its most beloved and unique indoor experiences for the whole family including life-like dinosaurs, dinosaur themed rides and attractions, live dinosaur shows, interactive science and art activities, a “Triceratots” soft play area for our littlest explorers, photo opportunities, and more.

Kiowa County Senior Center menus shared

Under advisement from the Kiowa County Health Department the Kiowa County Senior Center Board of Directors plans that the center will be closed to dining in and all activities this coming week. Meals on Wheels will run as normal, and any senior who wants to pick up a meal is welcome to do so, but please call 620-723- 2288 to let Kari know. Meals to pick up will be available after 11:30 at the south entrance.

Nominations now open for the 2022 American Humane Hero Dog Awards® : National campaign honoring heroic and loving canines back for twelfth year; Winners to be honored at red carpet awards gala reaching millions

WASHINGTON, D.C. – American Humane, the country’s first national humane organization, has announced the official start of the 2022 American Humane Hero Dog Awards campaign. The twelfth annual, year-long campaign seeks to identify and honor the best of our best friends and will culminate this fall with the star-studded “American Humane Hero Dog Awards” gala on November 11 in Palm Beach. The event reaches and is eagerly followed by millions of animal lovers around the world every year.

Golden Valley 4-H Club

Members of the Golden Valley 4-H Club met December 12 for their monthly meeting at the Iuka City Hall. It was a joint meeting with the Preston 4-H Club and activities included officer training, Christmas caroling around Iuka and sharing Christmas cookies and hot cocoa.

CALIFORNIA Gold Rush

The year of 1848 was a very busy year around the world. Revolutionary wars spread across Europe. The starvation caused by the Irish Potato Famine made many people leave Europe for the United States. The Mexican- American war was ended by the Treaty of Guadalupe Hildalgo, and the U.S. gained a large amount of land including Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California. All of those are important events, but one event that happened in 1848 may have changed the world more than anything else. On January 24, 1848 James Marshall discovered gold at Sutter’s Mill.

Make a reading resolution

New Year’s is past, but it is not too late for a resolution. It probably will not surprise you that I am about to suggest that you resolve to set a reading goal. In the past I have written about my Millennium Reading List. I chose 100 great books published between 1900 and 1999 to read. Have I read all of the books on my list? No. Is that a bad thing? No, because the list became the source for discovering more and more books I wanted to read.
