Haviland Fire Department continues a legacy of service, needs help for equipment upgrades

SINCE 1906 when Haviland was incorporated, the volunteering women and men of the Haviland Fire Department [HFD] have pursued excellence in fire suppression and emergency services for the residents of eastern Kiowa County. Their legacy of service includes generations of people committed to annual training, State certifications, growing governmental regulations, equipment maintenance, and fund-raising. These things still continue to this day.

L. J. and J. Automotive brings used-car expertise to the area

L. J. & J. Automotive is a family-owned business, operated by Lawrence Gillespie. L. J. & J. is located approximately two miles north of St. John on US Highway 281. The 51- year-old business was established in 1971 in the town of St. John. The services offered include towing, mechanic work, agriculture work, and also custom exhaust bending. The company has three employees. Todd Gillespie, son of Lawrence Gillespie, is the lead mechanic.

White’s Foodliner is more than just groceries

White’s Foodliner at 329 North US-281 in St. John started in 2018. White’s now has 33 employees. The different types of occupations in White’s Foodliner includes department heads, store managers, grocery managers, and traveling specialists. Types of services and products include: groceries, cleaning supplies, beauty products, gasoline, diesel, and E85. Weekly ads may be found on the website in addition to online shopping. The company’s goals are to provide groceries for the community.

County commissioners approve new communication tower purchase

At the January 10 meeting of the Pratt County Commission, Heather Morgan, Pratt County Economic Development Consultant, discussed the potential for Federal American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds to be used for the purchase of a new communication tower to be placed at the site of the new Pratt County Public Safety Center. The estimate for the tower itself, exclusive of delivery, concrete, and labor is $34,855. Commissioners unanimously approved using ARPA funds to cover the purchase.
