Christmas traditions kept alive despite COVID interruptions

THE DAY AFTER Thanksgiving I began packing away the turkeys and the pilgrims for another year and bringing out Santa and the Angels. COVID cases had been lessening, and I hoped maybe we could share the holidays with friends in our home this year. Unfortunately, between the new varient, more people traveling at Thanksgiving, cold weather bringing people together inside, and other reasons, we will probably not be inviting guests again this year.

A New Year’s Day Reminder: We are all created equal

JANUARY CONTAINS many memorable days of observance related to the field of criminal justice. One, in particular, is the Emancipation Proclamation on the 1st. It is easy for this observance to be upstaged by the Eve and Day celebrations associated with the New Year, understandably since it is not recognized as a Federal holiday. On January 1, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation of Proclamation [hereafter EP] as our Nation approached its third year of the Civil War. The EP declared that all persons held as slaves within the rebellious states that seceded from the United States “are, and henceforward shall be free (National Archives-EP). Today the five-page hand-written EP stands second to none among the all-time significant documents for human freedom, equality, and justice.

Christmas drive gives a peek into heavenly realm to come

COMING HOME to Pratt after a long drive east across the state and halfway into Missouri on the day after Christmas, I had the pleasure of watching a brilliant Kansas sunset take its time fading away to dark. As the mileposts clicked by, I watched the sky while trying to find a radio station to sing along to in order to keep myself awake behind the wheel as my husband tried to sleep (or as least tune out my singing). The radio was disappointing, the Kansas sky was not.

Area Agency on Aging recognizes Focal Point centers

THE KIOWA COUNTY Senior Center (Greensburg), Sunflower Senior Center of St. John, and the Stafford Senior Center are among 22 area senior centers from across the southwest part of the state named as a 2021 Focal Point by the SoutWest Kansas Area Agency on Aging (SWKAAA). The award, announced last month by SWKAAA Executive Director Rick Schaffer, recognizes programs and services provided from October 1, 2020 through September 30, 2021, for citizens of Kansas.
