Overreach panel quickly proved its irrelevance

The first day of hearings before the Special Committee on Government Overreach and the Impact of COVID-19 Mandates had a stranger-than-fiction quality to it. The Topeka Capital-Journal’s Andrew Bahl reported the most striking moment came in the afternoon, when Cornell Beard, a representative of a Wichita machinist union, compared requiring masks for unvaccinated individuals to the Nazi demarcation of Jewish residents during the Holocaust.

Monarchs, marigolds and Dia de Los Muertos have similarities

Several days ago, I spotted monarch butterflies feeding on the marigolds outside the library in Macksville, and although I feared it would be nearly impossible to slip up for a photograph before I startled the monarchs away, I decided it was worth the try. We all have a role to play in stopping domestic violence; know the signs

The color purple appears among the pigments of fall each year, not so much among the canopy of leaves dotting the landscape but on wrists, fingernails, tee shirts, banners, and billboards. Purple is the symbol for those observing Domestic Violence Awareness. The goal is to unite individuals and organizations working on domestic violence issues in the United States while raising awareness.

B-29 Museum in Pratt now home to WWII soldier’s war-time watch

A watch arrived at the B-29 Bombers on the Prairie Museum in Pratt for safe-keeping two weeks ago. It no longer has a military issued band, it couldn't be relied upon to keep accurate time, though the second hand was still functioning. However, this watch was a special time piece, or rather a piece of time, because it carried with it memories from WWII lived by the person who wore it. This Bulova watch came to Pratt because it needed to be placed with other memorabilia from WWII so others could listen and read it's story to remember and learn what happened during the war years of 1944 and 1945.

Art center is a drawing card for tourists and publicity seekers

Kansas Lt. Gov. David Toland recently made a special visit last Thursday to the newly christened M.T. Liggett Art Environment Visitors Center in Mullinville. This was a first-time visit for Toland who carefully viewed the exhibits and asked many questions about how and when M.T. developed his gift for metal sculpting using junk metal parts in his workshop starting about 1989.

McKinney wins overwhelming support for hospital board position

Unofficial November 2, 2021 Kiowa County election results are posted online at kiowacounty.org, but a quick peek into totals reveals some interesting races for local leadership positions. Dennis McKinney overwhelming won support for a position on the Kiowa County Hospital Board with 364 votes, but there were write-ins from all corners of the county for Chad Pore and eight other individuals.
